New Braunfels (i/ˌnjuː ˈbrɔːnfəlz/ newbrawn-fəlz) is a city in Comal and Guadalupe counties in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the seat of Comal County.[1] New Braunfels is a principal city of the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan statistical area. The city's population was 90,403 at the 2020 census.[2]
New Braunfels is 30 miles (48 km) northeast of downtown San Antonio.[1] It is 19 miles (31 km) southwest of San Marcos, and 45 miles (72 km) southwest of Austin.[1]
New Braunfels was established in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels.[1] Prince Solms named the settlement in honor of his home in Solms-Braunfels, Germany.[3] The city has a strong German influence.
