Square is a point-of-sale system designed for small and medium-sized businesses .[ 1] Launched in 2009 by Block, Inc. ,[ 2] it allows sellers to accept card payments and manage various business operations. As of 2023, Square leads the U.S. point-of-sale systems market,[ 3] [ 4] [ 5] serving 4 million clients and processing $210bn annually.[ 6] [ 7]
Square offers both physical devices, which read payment card information, and cloud-based software.[ 8] It operates as a financial services platform with features designed to support business operations.[ 9] [ 10] These features include e-Commerce management,[ 11] customer bookings,[ 12] inventory management,[ 13] payroll processing, shift scheduling,[ 14] banking and access to business loans .[ 15] [ 16] As of 2023, Square is available in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the U.K.[ 17]
