Rukmini (Sanskrit: रुक्मिणी, lit. 'radiant', IAST: Rukmiṇī) is a Hindu goddess and the first queen of Krishna.[7][8][9] She is the historical as well as the spiritual character found in the Hindu Scripture, Ithihasa -Mahabharata and Harivamsha. She is the eternal consort of Krishna and always assists him as his Shakti. In Vaishnavism, she is described as Krishna's principal queen as well as the chief of his wives in Dvaraka.[10] In scriptures, Rukmini is regarded as an avatar of Lakshmi and is the Parashri of Krishna. [11][12] She follows Vishnu in his every incarnation on earth and She was Sita in her previous incarnation. She represents 'Shri ' in Shri Krishna's name and is the most beautiful goddess /woman of her time. Rukmini is venerated primarily in Warkari,[13] and Haridasa tradition, and additionally in Sri Vaishnavism.[citation needed]
Rukmini is mainly worshipped in Maharashtra and South India. The people of Maharashtra venerate her with Vithoba (a regional form of Krishna) and call her Rakhumai.[14] In South India, she is worshipped along with Krishna and his and his other primary consort Satyabhama. She is his cosort in his every form like Venu Gopala, Pandavadhoota, Parthasarathy and Geetacharya. Her birthday is celebrated every year on the occasion of Rukmini Ashtami.[15]
