The 2024 British Columbia general election was held on October 19, 2024, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly to serve in the 43rd parliament of the Canadian province of British Columbia.
The incumbent New Democratic Party (NDP) government, led by Premier David Eby since 2022, sought re-election to a record third consecutive term. The NDP's primary opponent was the Conservative Party led by John Rustad. Incumbent opposition leader Kevin Falcon and his BC United party (formerly the BC Liberals), seeing no realistic prospect of victory, withdrew their candidates only months before the election, in order to avoid splitting the vote with the resurgent Conservatives. A number of BC United candidates either defected to the Conservatives or chose to stand as independent or unaligned candidates, but all five of those independents were defeated.[1] This was the first election since 1900 in which the party did not stand candidates in.
The election was the first to be held since a significant redistribution of electoral boundaries was finalised in 2023. The Legislative Assembly also expanded in size from 87 seats to 93 seats.
With roughly 98% of votes tabulated by just after midnight PDT on October 20, a number of races remain too close to call. Due to automatic recounts and the counting of out-of-district ballots, final results are not expected for another week.[2][3]
